Nintendo Increases Wii ProductionThursday, May 24, 2007 Nintendo is stepping up production for the Wii at their factories in China due to very high demand for the popular gaming console. The company expects to sell 35 million Wii units by 2012, possibly even by 2011. This total is not far behind the amount of Playstation 2 systems which have been sold. Over 38.2 million PS2 consoles have been sold since being introduced. Marketing chief at Nintendo of America, George Harrison mentions: Demand is much greater than we anticipated. A year ago no one thought we would be in this position.Although the PS2 is now considered 'old' technology, the demand for the popular console still exists and the PS2 actually outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in April. Nintendo has big plans for the future of the Wii including the release of several new game titles such as "Mario Strikers Charged" which is sure to be a big hit. Another advantage Nintendo has when it comes to profit is the fact that they produce a total of 70 percent of their game software whereas Sony for example manufactures only about 15 percent which largely cuts into their profits. Nintendo believes that part of the reason the Wii has become so popular is of course the price but also the fact that they don't just target their games and advertising towards a limited group of hardcore gamers, their goal is to draw attention to people of all ages and backgrounds.
